Global Citizen is a social action platform for a global generation that aims to solve the world’s biggest challenges. Working with Lady Gaga and a multitude of prominent artists in the world, Global Citizen was able to create a platform to raise funds for global COVID-19 response efforts. There were global music stars performing from home in self-isolation during the coronavirus crisis, including the Rolling Stones and Billie Eilish. Songs were interspersed with messages from actors such asMatthew McConaughey and Lupita Nyong’o, as well as other figures includingMichelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey. This was in collaboration with the World Health Organisation and features over six hours of incredible live performances shown to us virtually!
This was an incredible way of raising funds and the One World: Together at Home concert raised over $127m for coronavirus relief!
"While the two-hour television broadcast portion – also screened by the BBC in the UK with additional performances from Paul McCartney, Tom Jones and more – was framed as a gift to essential workers, the preceding six hours invited donations, with the bulk of the cash coming from corporate sponsors. The WHO’s Covid-19 Solidarity Response Fund will get $55.1m, while $72.8m will go to charities such as food banks and housing providers. The WHO fund is used to allocate tests and treatment, and to support development of a vaccine." – Guardian
